Book Alike

Book recs based on movies and TV shows

I watch a lot of television, y'all. So it naturally bleeds over into my reading life. So many times I'll tell my husband, "This book could be a Netflix series!" (Hello, Shadow & Bone) Or I'll recommend a book to my sister by making up some weird combo of movies. "It's like Freaky Friday, and Clue, mixed with Groundhog Day!" (That one was The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, and that was a SPOT ON comparison!) So here's a list of some of my favorite #bookalike recommendations!

I love John Wick, and the world of assassins and their underground society. And those fight scenes...stellar. Orphan X is a gritty, action packed story with a hero who was trained to be an assassin from childhood. The fight scenes are really what make this comparison for me. I could also make a strong comparison to the Jason Bourne series.

Vikings is an epic show about viking warriors that spans generations. The First Girl Child is an epic story about warriors and monks and princesses, spanning over ten years. And the viking vibes are STRONG with this one. I'll be honest, I had only ever read historical fiction by Amy Harmon before this, and so I went into it not expecting such an epic fantasy story.

Purchase The First Girl Child on Amazon.

Oh man, this one is so good! Alosa is the sober, snarkier, female Captain Jack Sparrow. Like together, they could rule the seas, but if they were ever opposed - my money's on Alosa. I consumed this series and then watched Pirates of the Caribbean again because it was definitely the same kind of swashbuckling adventure. Also, the audiobooks for this series are delightful.

Purchase Daughter of the Pirate King on Amazon.

Caraval is one of my favorite stories, because it's so well written and it paints this vibrant picture in your mind. So I was constantly imagining a Tim Burton film in my head. It's got those crazy Alice in Wonderland vibes with bright colors and nonsensical characters. The audiobook for this series is also good!

Purchase Caraval on Amazon.

The Six of Crows duology is a series I recommend all. the. time. It's just so yummy, y'all. A dirty city, gang/mafia family elements, a cast of lovable misfits, an impossible heist. I know it's weird to put Peaky Blinders and Ocean's 11 together, but if you read the series you will 100% agree with me. The gangster element mixed with the quirky ensemble characters is SO GOOD.

Purchase Six of Crows on Amazon.

Knives Out was one of my favorite movies last year! Such an awesome twist on the whodunnit genre. So when I read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle I had similar feelings. It's not your typical locked room mystery. It's not really your typical anything. It turns the genre on it's head with multiple perspectives, repeating events, and mysteries within mysteries. If you like to read with background music, reading this with the Knives Out soundtrack is pretty epic!

Anne Frasier is the QUEEN of creepy crime fiction, y'all! The Body Reader was the first thing I read from her, and like three chapters in I was telling my husband, "This is like reading an episode of Criminal Minds!" At it's core, it's a police procedural, but on top of that is so much more. A heroin who has survived something horrific, her partner who isn't sure if she can be trusted, plus gruesome murders to solve. It's a series that will grab ahold of you quickly!

Purchase The Body Reader on Amazon.
